We are in the process of planning Zuiko’s Hōji (49 day memorial service). Virtual participation as well as in person attendance will be possible. We will update Caring Bridge and the CRZC website with details as soon as things settle and we know more. 

As mentioned in yesterday’s update, we want to assure everyone that Sunday morning zazen at the Cedar Rapids Zen Center will continue in person and virtually with the help of our clergy friends from around the region. Monday evening dharma study will also continue virtually. Please check the CRZC website for updates to our practice schedule going forward.I have been reflecting on Zuiko’s final words in the last issue of Currents (titled “Death is a Part of Life”) she wrote that “death is a state in which beingness returns to beingness, and then just continues on.” May the example of her life and death help us to see the interconnectedness of things, and renew and inspire us in our own practice and life, moment by moment, and breath by breath.

Dear friends and family, 

 
It is with deep reverence that we announce the passing of our beloved Zen teacher, Zuiko Redding. Zuiko transitioned peacefully this afternoon at the Oldorf Hospice Home in Hiawatha, IA, where she was receiving around the clock care and attention. Sangha members were present with her for much of the time these last few days, and Kokonami was with her when she passed. 
 
A visitation will be held this Sunday (time TBD) at the Stewart-Baxter Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids. We will update the CRZC website and Caring Bridge tomorrow with the exact time and details of the visitation. Following the visitation, Zuiko’s body will be taken to Iowa City to be cremated, in accordance with her wishes.  
 
Zuiko’s Hōji (49 day memorial service) are being made and we’ll make that information available as soon as things are settled. Virtual participation as well as in person attendance will be possible. Please understand that emails looking for information may not receive a timely response just now; we’ll post what we know on the website and on Caring Bridge so that everyone can check there at their own convenience.
 
Over the last several months, as Zuiko prepared herself and those around her for this moment, she stressed the importance that we continue to practice and to come together as a sangha. With that in mind, we want to assure everyone that Sunday morning practice at the Cedar Rapids Zen Center will continue in person and virtually with the help of our clergy friends from around the region. Monday evening dharma study will also continue virtually. Please check the CRZC website for updates to our practice schedule going forward.
 
Finally, while Zuiko’s passing was not unexpected, we are of course saddened at the loss. At the same time, we celebrate the legacy she leaves us: the wisdom of the Buddha, the comfort of the dharma, and the interconnectedness of the sangha. May we come together during this time to carry on the practice she established on behalf of all beings.

Dear friends and family,
 
Today Zuiko was having increased difficulty breathing, and decided to go back to the Oldorf Hospice Home in Hiawatha IL where she could receive closer monitoring and care. She was confident in her decision and after being admitted to the home spent most rest of the day resting with Kokonami at her side.  
 
We will share updates here as things progress. In the meantime, thank you all for holding Zuiko close to your heart.
